Maths Portfolio Sample

Description: In class we have been tested on a series of math questions. Each Stage Group in maths had different questions. For example: Stage 5 had to use one number, while stage 6 had to use two. For stage 6 maths, we were tested on questions like: "Write two numbers that have a sum of exactly 30." These questions were laid out as Rebel Sport prices.

Big Idea: The strategies that I'm learning at the moment is: R/C, E/A and P/V. If you don't know what these strategies do or what they mean, here is my explanation. R/C stands for "Rounding And Compensating" We basically round a number from our equation, then add how many numbers we rounded in the first place. If that makes no sense, here is an example: 63-39=?    63 - 40 +1 =24.

E/A stands for Equal Additions. This is the same as R/C but except from add after the equation, we add before the equation. For example: 63-39=?      64-40=24. And P/V stands for Place Value. 

You are probably wondering what answers I got. Well, here are my answers as well as what strategies I used.

5+9 = 14

600+110+14=724

WOW Aye, you are defiantly showing a lot of stratagies and  what you have been very good at. You could work on showing 

the Reversibility strategy. I really think you have shown us what you know and what to work on. You have done a lot of work on this as I have seen you in class. Amy

Evaluation: Thanks Amy. I really think I have learned a lot of strategies that I have never have known before. I think I might need to use more strategies that may be a good match for the equation. Other than that, I think I have gotten a better understanding of different strategies. I hopefully can use these strategies in High School or College or my job!

Te Ahu a Turanga Noho Marae

Description:  In week 7, we had an overnight stay at the local Marae in Woodville.  We were immersed in Maori culture and participated in a range of activities.  We set two goals to focus on during our stay.

I aim to cooperate with my team more because I usually like hanging out with people I know REALLY well.

I aim to create a creative presentation that will bring humour and entertainment in the camp concert.

Big Idea:  

1.  Did you achieve your goals?  How do you know?

I know I have achieved my goals by far. I managed to cooperate with my group well even though I didn't know them that well. I have also brought entertainment in the room at camp concert.

2.  What are you most proud of from the marae stay and why?

I am most proud of being able to have a GOOD sleep. I might of overslept by 30 mins, but at least I got a better sleep than anyone else. I didn't get any interruptions and I didn't let the noise bother me.

3.  What challenged you the most and why?

What challenged me the most was the stilts. I have never tried the stilts before so it was a great experience. I kept falling down and losing my balance but eventually I got there by practising.

The first picture is a picture of a pukeko. In the bus ride to the Marae, there was a pukeko walking by. It was pretty amazing that we saw a native bird.

The second one is a Maori symbol. It was called a Swirl Koru. A Swirl Koru means growth and unity. I thought at camp that we were all growing in our learning of Maori culture and togetherness. 

The third one is a picture of the Manawatu Gorge. In the Gorge walk I thought the scenery was extraordinary including the story behind it.

Hi my name is Jaimey and the story you’re about to read is something you won’t believe. After Grandad passed away suddenly, we had to move into his old house, all the way on the other side of the country! Grandad’s rundown bungalow was on 32 Red Rum street. If you haven't noticed, Red Rum spells 'murder' backwards. Everybody talks about the inscrutable story behind his neighbourhood but we always thought it was just nonsense. But now me and my irritating little brother Mac have to actually live here. Mum always says not to believe the gossip about the street but me and Mac can’t help ourselves now.  The house is really old with some cobwebs and holes with mucky water oozing. Our old house was not like this. Our old house felt like a mansion with brand new rooms! This house has lot's of strange things but I can't prove it to my mother.  If my father were here, he would understand that all this nonsense could be true. But sadly, he got killed by hunters. He was collecting firewood in the near by forest where the hunters were also roaming. The hunters heard whispering rustles in the bushes and thought it was a tiger. They weren't wise because tigers are mostly in the jungle. They selfishly shot a bullet in the bushes. The bullet shot my father with a killing blow. Everything felt felt different that day. Ok, Ok, no more time for the intro now. Let's begin with the real story. We will begin with the part where it was my first day of school.

Today was my first day at Koopsy Intermediate school. It wasn't long till I noticed that if you unscramble Koopsy, it spells spooky. As I walked through the pale white path of the school it felt comforting. The school had lots of murals and colourful signs. The rest was covered in a blanket of white. We took Mac to his new class and his teacher seemed really nice. After that, mum and I had a conversation.
"Jaimey! Do you remember what class you're in?"

"Yes mum, room 16!"

"Well you have a good memory."

"Actually mum, my memory is too good. I remember things, I want to forget." I said softly...                            

Evaluation

How has your writing has improved this term?

My writing has improved because more people want to read the whole story and it is beginning to go smoothly.

The part of my story I am most proud of is…

The part I am most  proud of is the part where Jaimey describes the different features of the house because that makes a picture in the readers head.

Next time, what is a goal you can work towards?

Trying to link two paragraphs because when I link the two paragraphs it didn't really connect.
