Poetry (Cinquains and Free Verse)

Description: In Troy's writing group, we have been focused on Cinquains and Free Verse poetry. My cinquain is about the moon and my free verse is about watching the Disneyland fireworks with my cousin. Here is a slide of all of our poetry. Cinquains is a type of poerty thats ordered from syllables. In the first line you have to have 2 syllables, then 4, then 6, 8 and back to 2. For freeverse, there are no rules. You can write it however you desire. My slide is the 4th one :P

Big Idea:

    (\ _ /)
   ( ' x ' )
  c(")(")
    bunny

Feed|back/ Feedforward: Wow Aye that is some amzing poetry. My favourite is the free verse just the starting is wow! Next time I think you could work on the background or chose a diffverent colour for the words so that they stand out. but appart frome that I think you did an amazing job.
Sophie

Evaluation: Thanks Sophie for the feedback and Feedforward! I think that I have done a great job in using words to describe my topic. I believe I have officially gotten an understanding of Cinquains and Freeverse. Maybe next time I could add more language features and stay to the rules of Cinquains.

Poems of life

On Pages, I stumbled upon four poems of life I wrote during the beginning of the year. I found them great to post since my goal in writing is poetry. So here are Aye's Four Poems of Life! (Friendship, nature, transport and love.)

Aye's poems of life

Friendship
Friendship, oh friendship
Thank you for making us be
Without you we would be nothing!
We would just be an un growing seed
You're the cherry on my sundae,
the finishing piece
Without you, my heart would sink
You make the whole world smile
all in one pile
Without you, the world never see the bright side
That's why you're always in mind

Nature
Nature,
An alleyway to kindness
Creating life in our hearts.
Helping us live,
Helping us grow
You've been with us right from the start
We understand your disappointment,
Of people misusing you
But we promise
We will repay you back.
All the greenness and colors
The astonishing sights
You're the one who has made us lovers
So please don't go
With all the wild life and views
Because we would be goners,
without you

Transport
No matter what nationality you are,
White, Black
Short, Tall
Male, Female
You are always traveling.
Train, bus, taxi your own car
It doesn't matter
Modern transport is very important
To meet friends and family
Whenever you are in a rush
Modern transport can take you there in a hurry
In the end of the days
We can count on you
To take us there
Wherever, Whenever

Love

Oh love,
You make our hearts tingle
One of the most important essence in life
That we love to mingle
Your the one that sets fire into our hearts
Right from the start
You complete us
You cause affection
Without you,
We would never be perfection
Love is what makes us special
We would have no room in our hearts to
Be happy
Love life
Meet someone special
Or have friends and family
Thank you Love
For completing our life story

Free Verse Poetry

Description: In Troy's writing group we are focusing on poetic writing. The type of poetry we are focusing on is Free Verse Poetry. Free verse means that there are no limits or rules to how we write our poem.

The poem I wrote about was about seeing the Disneyland Fireworks. Here it is:

Bang! Bang! Bang!
The celebration has begun
Pow! Pow! Pow!
The colors explode to life
Lying in the grass,
Staring at the blanket of stars
Dreaming with my cousin
Music gets louder
Disney idols appear
The heart of Animation,
In one big splat of colors
A canvas of dreams appear
Thanks Disneyland
For being like no other.

Evaluation:
1) Reflect on the links to senses  you used:
I think have used most of the five senses except for smell because I didn't know how to include this in my poem.

2) Reflect on the language features you used:
I think I have used repetition and short sentences. I found short sentences easy for including in my poem because one word can make a poem more powerful.

3) Reflect on what you could improve on next time:
Next time I would like to include ALL of the senses (see, hear, feel, taste and smell) and also try to use a variety of language features.

Writing Portfolio Sample

Description: My writing goal is to use a range of different sentences. One of them is complex sentences. I am gonna try get better at this goal by using a range of different sentences and try combining them together. In Troy's writing class, we watched a movie about a mouse trying to get adopted. We had to retell the story in our own way and try to add complex sentences in the story.  Here is the movie we watched. It is called "Mouse For Sale":

Big Idea:  Here is my story. The complex sentences are highlighted red. If you don't know what a complex sentence is, here is a brief explanation. A complex sentence is a sentence where it has two clauses. One of the clauses is an independent clause (which means it can stand alone) and the other is a dependent clause. For example: Because my coffee was too cold, I had to heat it in the microwave. The underlined part is the independent clause. The dependent clause can't stand alone so it is added to a independent clause.

Here is my writing. Hope you enjoy!:

Feedback/feedforward:
Great Job Aye, I really like your writing! I love all the complex sentences that you have used. They make your writing much more interesting! Next time I think that you could make smaller paragraphs because they are sometimes a little big! Great Job! Hannah K

Evaluation:
I honestly think that I have developed an understanding of complex sentences. Before, I had never heard of a phrase like "complex sentences". I think I might need to work on using different types of sentences like: " Compound, simple, compound- complex etc" I'll work towards this goal by thinking more about how they work and which way will imporve my sentence. - Aye

Mouse For Sale

WALT: Use complex sentences

In Troy's writing class we watched a video called 'Mouse for Sale' Since there was no talking in the video we had to re write the story but  using complex sentences. Here is my story:

Mouse For Sale

Hello humans, I am Arnold. I am a 3 year old cat from San Francisco America. I was born in a garbage bin in an alleyway across the road from 'Disney's Animal Adoption Centre'. Of course I never  knew what an 'Animal Adoption Centre' meant until my parents died. My mother and father died from eating junk since eating scraps caused them to get sick. When they died I had no idea of what to do in life. I was so hungry without milk.

Then the humans came. They saw me, a small gingery kitten starving in the alleyway. They picked me up and told me that I'm getting a new family and home where I can get all the food I need. They carried me to 'Disney's Animal Adoption Centre' and placed me in a cage and left me there. I got to eat some cat food which tasted like heaven. I always hope that someone would adopt me. The problem was that I only had 3 legs. The surgeons treated me since I had this disease. No one really had any empathy for a little kitten like me. As I grew older I started to realise that I just needed to deal with it. Beside me was a glass case with a mouse inside. The mouse was blue with adorable eyes.

That very mouse was feeling the same struggle as me. Except instead of 3 legs the mouse had HUGE ears. Believe me, the ears were almost as big as the mouse's body! Everyday I would watch the mouse trying to get adopted. He had no chance with ears that huge. But one day the mouse really inspired me. Two boys came along and stared at the mouse. The mouse took his chances and showed them his favourite trick. He twitched his large ears which made me always crack. But when the boys saw his 'ear twitching' they did laugh but not how you would expect it. They actually made fun of him and ended up up laughing out the door. The mouse felt so sad and ashamed that no one had empathy for him either. Not even a tiny termite which shared the same case as the mouse. Whenever the mouse failed in encouraging the humans of adopting him, he would laugh extremely hard. Then another boy came along but he was wearing these enormous headphones. He was listening to some smooth music with a large on/off button in the middle the hearing piece. He was checking out the lizard enclosure fascinated by their movement. This was the part where I got inspired. Instead of letting him ignore him he had the ability to act. He used his little fake wooden see saw and place a cashew on it. Then he had a run up and jumped on the other end of the see saw. But instead of the cashew flying over to the boy the nut actually banged on the glass case and reflected back right at the mouse. Since the cashew banged so hard it reflected from the mouse to the wheel running thing. Since I wasn't a mouse I had no idea what it was called. The mouse felt dizzy and fell unconscious. When he woke up I could imagine him seeing a blur of the termite cracking up so hard that he was on his back. The boy was still there about to leave the lizard enclosure. The mouse felt so angry and embarrassed that he ran up to the  termite. If I was the termite I would of thought he would squish me. But instead he placed him on the see saw and jumped on the other end of the saw. The termite flung smoothly across and over the glass case and right in the middle of the boy's on/off button on his headphones. Bull's Eye! The mouse made these squeaky noises causing the boy to hear him. The boy edged closer to the mouse and stared. At first I thought the mouse was going to get laughed at again but instead the boy slowly plus gently took off his headphones. Slowly.  Then the headphones came off and my mouth opened. I could just see from my gaze that the boy also had over sized ears! The ears were just as huge as his head. He placed his hand gently into the glass case offering the mouse to jump on. At first the mouse flinched back and suddenly acted all shy, but then he placed one foot in front of the other on the boy's hand. From there on they became the best of friends. How should I know? Well I was actually there when the mouse went to his new home. After the boy picked up the mouse he paused and looked at me. Meow. I tried to act normal and cute. I actually hoped that he would adopt me but in my head I was thinking 'Who am I kidding. He would never adopt me. I pretty sure he is wise enough to know that cats and mice are not the best of friends.' He picked me up and the mouse flinched and became extremely scared.  I gave him a gesturing look to reassure him. When the boy noticed that mice wasn't my delicacy he adopted me as well as the mouse. This very boy had complete empathy for everyone. I wanted to be just like him. (apart from the huge ears). When we arrived in our new home, the mouse and I become close friends. The boy's name was Oxpadter. It took me a while to memorise the name.

He eventually named me Arnold and the mouse Mickey. He gave me all the food I could ever need until I became a bit fat. (Not really fat but well, lets say chubby) Oxpadter introduced us to all his friends and family. Eventually he introduced us to these two boys who were his friends but not really close. One of them had a broken arm and the other had a broken ankle. I came to realise that these two boys were the nasty boys that made fun of Mickey. I felt so angry at them that I kinda went crazy and scratched both of them. It did feel good though. Mickey thanked me and we had the best lives together. And we lived happily ever after! (But we did not get married. That's just crazy!) THE END

Complex Sentences

WALT: To use complex sentences.
Description: In writing we are learning to use complex sentences. A complex sentence is a sentence where an independent clause is connect to a dependent clause.

For example: Sea turtles can spend 99 percent of their time under water, how interesting.
The text in Red is an independent clause so it can stand alone while the text in Pink is a dependent clause where it can't stand alone.

We had to write a story about Sea Turtles to show our understanding of complex sentences.
First we had to gather normal facts about Sea turtles, then we changed them into complex sentences.

Here is my writing. I hope you like it!

Sea turtles are very interesting animals. A sea turtle's life style is different from other turtles, how amazing. Some of them can even travel across the whole ocean in a migration! The average sea turtle would travel around 1000km just lay their eggs, isn't that a big waste of energy? Sea turtles spend 99% of their time in the water. Leather-backs weigh up to 1000 pounds, they must eat a lot! Speaking of food, adult sea turtles would eat moss and sometimes jellyfish while baby sea turtles  would eat crabs. I hope these facts would give you a more understanding of sea turtles, right?

My Swimming Goals

Description: This term we have started swimming again. we have made some videos to show our skills in swimming. We looked back at out videos and observed what we could get better at and needs more practise. Then we made our own goals.

My Backstroke:

The Big Idea: Looking back at my videos I have made my goal. My goal is to concentrate on my kicking in backstroke. I am going to do this by trying to kick higher and concentrate more. I will try to achieve this goal before the term ends. I will know when my goal is achieved when I feel like I
can't get it wrong. I will retake a video and check if my goal is achieved. If I think my goal is
achieved I will set a new goal for myself.

13/3/15
Sadly, I wasn't at school when we had to retake another video of ourselves accoplishing our goal. :( So what I'm going to do is tell you how I feel about my goal.

Evaluation: I feel like my kicking in backstroke is improving and I feel like my feet are kicking higher and sinking less. I'm concentrating more on my legs and arms equally without overthinking
about both. I feel like I really have achieved my goal. I have tried achieved my goal in swimming sports and it went really well!

Looking Back

Purpose: To share memories from my childhood.

In class we have been writing a poem from our childhood. Here is mine....

Remember when making  my parents concerned that I couldn't talk till I was 3? Then I finally  to started to speak only a little.

Remember walking to class and out of no where  a boy ran over me? My mum was worried sick!

Remember when I took a bite of a kiwi fruit for the first time in Pre School and ended up in the hospital? That was really unexpected.

Remember grasping my breath from an asthma attack in Yr 2?

Remember listening to a boring piano song which was like 10 pages long.

That was me growing up!

Writing Sample

WALT:  Entertain

My writing goal this term was to linking ideas between sentences and paragraphs

SUCCESS CRITERIA
Structure
I have organised and sequenced my ideas into paragraphs for purpose and effect.

TASK: craft a free-choice piece of writing that shows how I am developing my goal

This is my first draft:

This is my edited piece:

Hi my name is Jaimey and the story you’re about to read is something you won’t believe. After Grandad passed away suddenly, we had to move into his old house, all the way on the other side of the country! Grandad’s rundown bungalow was on 32 Red Rum street. If you haven't noticed, Red Rum spells 'murder' backwards. Everybody talks about the inscrutable story behind his neighbourhood but we always thought it was just nonsense. But now me and my irritating little brother Mac have to actually live here. Mum always says not to believe the gossip about the street but me and Mac can’t help ourselves now.  The house is really old with some cobwebs and holes with mucky water oozing. Our old house was not like this. Our old house felt like a mansion with brand new rooms! This house has lot's of strange things but I can't prove it to my mother.  If my father were here, he would understand that all this nonsense could be true. But sadly, he got killed by hunters. He was collecting firewood in the near by forest where the hunters were also roaming. The hunters heard whispering rustles in the bushes and thought it was a tiger. They weren't wise because tigers are mostly in the jungle. They selfishly shot a bullet in the bushes. The bullet shot my father with a killing blow. Everything felt felt different that day. Ok, Ok, no more time for the intro now. Let's begin with the real story. We will begin with the part where it was my first day of school.

Today was my first day at Koopsy Intermediate school. It wasn't long till I noticed that if you unscramble Koopsy, it spells spooky. As I walked through the pale white path of the school it felt comforting. The school had lots of murals and colourful signs. The rest was covered in a blanket of white. We took Mac to his new class and his teacher seemed really nice. After that, mum and I had a conversation.
"Jaimey! Do you remember what class you're in?"

"Yes mum, room 16!"
"Well you have a good memory."
"Actually mum, my memory is too good. I remember things, I want to forget." I said softly...

Evaluation
How has your writing has improved this term?
My writing has improved because more people want to read the whole story and it is beginning to go smoothly.

The part of my story I am most proud of is…
The part I am most  proud of is the part where Jaimey describes the different features of the house because that makes a picture in the readers head.

Next time, what is a goal you can work towards?
Trying to link two paragraphs because when I link the two paragraphs it didn't really connect.

Feedback/Feedforward:
Well done Aye I really got hooked into the story at the start. I also love how you have Red Rum street and Koopsy intermediate school. Maybe next time you can  add some more paragraphs.

Published product

WALT: publish
Today we got to make the finished product. This is my finished writing about caving.

Caving
As I tipped toed through the dark hollow entrance I wanted to back away. It was the entrance way to go caving. I turned on my headlight and clenched my torch in my crying palms. As I crept past the
crayfish in the swaying water puddles, I could hear the darkness laugh at me. Not the laugh when you see something funny, the kind of evil laugh in the movies. I walked slowly squeezing through the tight spaces in the dark damp cave. Then CREEK... I heard a creek. I didn't move. I was as frozen as a tv on pause. I realised it was just the sounds of nature trying to frighten me.

Suddenly all the torches went out. I might have to follow along. All was dark. Then I saw light. The light of glowworms! I see the beauty rule me. It was like millions of stars invaided the cave. It was amazing. I could not wait to tell my mum and dad about this.

The glowworms made me feel braver. Then I heard we had to crawl under. We had to crawl quite low. As low as you can crawl! The ceiling lowerd down and it was difficult. The rocks below me were wet so my hands got soaked. I was also wearing track pants so they got wet too. Just as I thought that I could get up the ceiling hit my back. When we got out of the low ceiling my legs were jelly.

Then I saw the light overwhelm me. It was the exit. I could hear the sun congratulate me. Then we got to choose if we wanted to go through the damp hollow mess again. I wanted to give it a go.

Once again I crept in the damp cave. This time I opened my eyes wider and saw the beauty of the dark world inside. I felt braver and confident. My eyes got dragged on the crayfish in the puddles. I got so distracted by them that I fell in one of the deep puddles. I heard my foot crying as it soaked right in.

We carried on and this time we noticed stalagmites and stalactites. The stalagmites and stalactites
were small like ants. Then we saw the glowworms once again. They were as beautiful as ever. Now we noticed lots of things about caving. I wished that we could go again.

WALT read and respond to text.
I read this article on this website. Click here to see it.
If you read the article I agree to it. We need all children to have a school. Since over 57 million children with no education there lives will not get better in the future. Write in the comments below if you agree or disagree and why.

Poutama-Rama comments

Today on my timetable I had to write a comment on the Poutama Rama blog. My comment is from the buddy challenge. Here it is:
My highlight for buddy challenge day was trying to work together with my buddy. The most challenging thing for me was doing the trust challenges. My buddy wouldn't want to do anything because she was scared. No matter how much we encourage her. Only for the trust challenges. I didn't notice anyone being a role model. Not that there is none. I just didn't see any. I didn't get to notice anybody showing perseverance because I was too busy focusing  on my buddy.

My Spring Holiday

Dear 4.5
I would like to tell you all details about my spring holiday.

At the beginning of the holidays, my mum enrolled me for holiday Taekwon-do classes. My mum also told Olivia's mum about that. So we went to Taekwon-do together. We have to take classes an hour a day for all weekdays. At our first class we had so much fun. We learned these cool Taekwon-do moves and self defence. At the end of the day we got a gift. The gift was a cool Taekwon-do wristband to remember the first day of Taekwon-do. The rest of the days were really cool too. But our gift was different everyday, all were healthy foods.

On Friday of the first week we went to Rotorua where we used to live before we moved to Palmy.  I missed Taekwon-do class on that day. We left the house in the morning and my dad started to drive. My dad drove us to Rotorua. During the trip we stopped at some places to eat and rest. Before we arrived at Rotorua, we stopped at Taupo lake. We took lots of photos there. We also had our lunch at KFC Taupo. After lunch my dad drove nonstop to Rotorua. We arrived at Rotorua around 2:00Pm.

In Rotorua, we stayed in lake front Novotel hotel. We went to our family friends house for dinner. I had fun playing with my friend Ivan. We played ball, soccer on Playstation, hide and seek. We played this game where we try to hide and someone has to find you and tag you with a ball. I also played on his keyboard. Then we came back to the hotel at 9:00Pm. While my mum was taking a rest at the hotel, my dad and I went to a fun fair in front of the hotel. We went on the Bumper Cars and the Ghost Train. We also went to these mini games. Their was the clown game where you put 5 balls in a clown's mouth and try get a winning number. If you get a winning number you get a prize. I didn't get a winning number but the man who was working at the clown game gave me a prize anyway. I got to choose from a fake key necklace or a Taonga necklace made with a New Zealand Paul shell in a shape of a heart. The answer was pretty obvious. I chose the Paul necklace. There were other games I played but I forgot them.

The next day was a Saturday market day in Rotorua. My family and I skipped breakfast and instead we went to the Saturday market to have our breakfast. We had chicken and lamb barbecue and I also had an ice cream. After that my mum and dad send me to my old BFF Alicia's house. I spent the whole day with Alicia until 8:00Pm when my dad came to pick me up. During the day we played on minecraft on the Xbox. Our friend Mikayla also joined us on the play date. I use to go to Otonga School when I was in Rotorua and I was a yr 1 and 2. (Click here to go to Otonga School website) As I was saying, we also walked Alicia's 2 dogs. Alicia has 9 pets, dogs and cats. We walked her 2 dogs in the woods behind her house. It is really cool that she has the woods in her backyard. It was really cool. We took the short cut. We were walking with her dad and pretending that he was evil. We tried to run away from him. While Alicia's dad was out of sight, we talked about making our own weapons. We were thinking that at home we will make weapons. I will have a healing potion and a dagger, Alicia will have a sword and Mikayla will have a bow and arrow. When we got home we started to create. Since making a healing potion is hard, Alicia and Mikayla helped me. Alicia got an empty jar and I filled it with water. We also putted some coke inside. We poured in some soap, dabs of blue and purple nail polish, some perfume to make it smell good and some m&ms. Then Alicia's dad came with noodles. We all got a bowl of noodles. Me and Mikayla were eating it properly with a fork while Alicia was eating her noodles with her hand and eating it dry. There were these spices and Alicia's dad told me to try one out. I tried the sour cream and onion. In really liked it. Alicia told me to put the sour cream and onion spice in the healing potion. I did. The healing potion was this pinkish reddish colour. After noodles we went into Alicia's room to find more stuff for the healing potion. After that my healing potion was finished. Mikayla and Alicia started to make their weapons. Now that my healing potion was finished I needed to make my dagger. We were thinking of making our weapons out of cardboard but Alicia didn't have any. Instead, me and Alicia made our weapons out of hard paper. Mikayla wanted to make her bow and arrow out of sticks and long leaves.  Alicia made her sword and made one side of the sword clean and the other side filled with blood. I had trouble making my dagger. I didn't even know what a dagger is. Alicia and Mikayla told me that a dagger is like a mini sword. It took me 5 tries to get it right. At least I finally got my own paper dagger. Mikayla couldn't do it. She had big trouble finding what she wanted for her bow and arrow. She couldn't find any sticks or long leaves. We were really happy about making our weapons so me and Alicia jumped on her trampoline. Mikayla finally found a perfect stick and a long leaf. She just pretended that there were arrows. Then my mum and dad came. Alicia's dad told my parents that I am allowed to stay till 8:00Pm. I was really happy. Alicia's dad took us to this horse paddock. We played lots of games there. When we got back Mikayla's
mum was here. We had to say goodbye to Mikayla. When Mikayla left, me and Alicia played on minecraft on the Xbox. It was fun. Then Alicia's parents took us to the lakefront. We had hotdogs and chips. We fed some to the seagulls, baby geese, a goose, a black swan and baby swans. It was cool. Than we went back home. We went into Alicia's room and I saw some roller skates under Alicia's bed. I decided to wear them and I skated around the hall ways. Then my dad came. He was 5 minutes early. I told him that we still had time. So my dad talked to Alicia's dad for 5 minutes. Then I had to leave. Me and my dad got back to the hotel. Then me and my dad went to the spa and pool. My mum was too lazy to come. It was relaxing.

The next day me and my dad were sleeping happily when my mum woke us up. This was the day we had to leave. But I told my parents that I want to stay for 1 more day. My parents had to pay extra money to stay for another day just because they love me. We had so much fun. We went to Rainbow Springs and Skylines. Right now I am going to tell you about Rainbow Springs. This paragraph might be a bit long so be ready. In Rainbow Springs we first went to the Big Splash. It was awesomely cool. Look at the photo below. Look at our faces. Look at my mum's face. We had lots of fun. Than we went to this bird show. My mum did not like the bird show at all. I thought it was kind of cool. After the bird show, I got to play this game with the bird. What you do is, you give a coin to the bird. Than the bird gets the coin and slips it through the little whole of the money jar. Then we went to the Kiwi Encounter. We went with a guided tour. We learned a lot about the kiwi and the kiwi baby. Did you know that in New Zealand we only have the brown kiwi. After that we browsed around Rainbow Springs. I would love to tell you about the birds I have seen but I don't want to make a long paragraph like the last one. Then we went to Skylines. Skylines was just next door to Rainbow Springs so we walked there. At Skylines we went on the gondola up to Mt. Ngongotaha. Then me and my dad went on the luge for 3 times. What did my mum do? Well, she was so scared to ride the luge and spent the time by chatting with her friend on the phone while waiting for us on the mountain. Then we went to this restaurant in Skyvue restaurant. Skyvue is at the top of Mt. Ngongotaha. Also part of Skylines. In the restaurant, mum and dad had fish and chips while I got ice cream. Then we went to the jelly belly store in Skyvue. The shop was full of different kinds of jelly beans. Look below and you will see a picture of the jelly belly store. See how cool it was. Than we went to take some photos on Mt. Ngongotaha. After that we went back on the gondola to go down the mountain and we went back to Rainbow Springs. This time we went directly to the playground. Then we went back to the hotel. After that we went to the spa and jacuzzi and we called it a day.

The next day was our last day in Rotorua. We checked out from the hotel and went outside to the lake front. I got to blow lots of bubbles. It was fun. Then we went back home to Palmy.

When we went back home, it was the usual routine. I went back to my Taekwon-do class everyday. On the last day of Taekwon-do, we did a photoshoot. We also got a certificate and a gift.

My holiday were ended in a good way because I got to watch Percy Jackson, The sea monster with my mum and dad on Saturday. Guess what, it happended just now.

I am a little bit sad about school holiday ending but I am also happy because I get to meet my friends again.
